EarthScope Consortium 2019 RESESS Internship

Ocean acidification variability in the California Current

University of Colorado Boulder, PI/Mentor(s): Dr. Nicole Lovenduski & Dr. Riley Brady

In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the prestigious RESESS internship program at EarthScope Consortium (formerly UNAVCO). This experience ranks among the most impactful of my undergraduate years.

The internship took place in Boulder, Colorado, where I worked alongside Dr. Nicole Lovenduski’s Ocean Biogeochemistry lab group at the University of Colorado Boulder. My research focused on determining the relationship between the aragonite saturation state and its spatial and temporal variability. Drawing on NOAA’s California Current buoy data from the National Center for Environmental Information, I utilized the Python package ‘carbonate system solver’ (CO2SYS) to create a time series of the saturation state.

This internship was not only a valuable learning experience but also a pivotal moment in my journey toward data science. It was during this time that I began to explore the power of Python and its application to scientific research.

Beyond the technical skills I gained, this internship fostered a passion for ocean biogeochemistry research. I highly encourage undergraduate and graduate students interested in this field to explore the RESESS program.
